Murff’s Law

Murff’s Law:

“The time in which a technophile is placated by his latest gadget is divided in half with each new device aquired.”

We’ve all heard of Moore’s Law and in case you’ve forgotten, I’ll paraphrase.  “..the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit has doubled approximately every two years.”  Today, I’m announcing a theory (note it’s only a theory) that describes the insatiable appetite of a geek.  With each new laptop, TV, iPod, Zune (well maybe not the Zune), IR remote, etc. the post-purchase satisfaction is cut in half.  A graph shows that as the satisfaction goes to zero, an individual reaches a point where they must own every new device released to the market. Thus you end up with tech journalists who buy everything announced.

Essentially, users build up a tolerance to pleasure received from a new toy.  There comes a point where the enjoyment from a new device wanes off almost instantly creating an instant need for the next gadget.  I can think of industry that has this affect, drugs.

But, it’s not the product that people get hooked on, it’s that feeling of “this is the best technology man has.”  But, since Moore’s Law is pretty much true, “the best technology man has” is not the best for very long.

Google and Apple already know all of this and they make a killing off your lust for technology

Here’s another article I didn’t really read, I just like the headline.  Google is the slightly geeky kid at school who has friends that are jocks and friends that are ubergeeks.  Apple is the rich kid who gets a BMW for his 16th birthday and Microsoft is the kid with tape on his glasses who created a computer program to write his english term paper.   Deep down, don’t they all have problems with their social skills?

How is this news?  Could you imagine if every Windows update that went out was a major press event?  The tech blogosphere would be the most boring place on the planet.  But then again, Tech Toilet would be crazy busy keeping up with the crap.

I’m pretty sure everyone has already seen this before, it’s just too funny to ignore.  I gotta think someone at Apple was aware of the spoof before they released the iPad.  I’m sure the iPad will do well and sell millions of units.  But I think if their not carefull, Android will leapfrog them within five years.

Super Bowl Gambling May Alter Your Brain

Fair and Balanced, but not necessarily smart.  I don’t think it’s the gambling that alters viewers brains.  Let’s take a deeper look at what Super Bowl fans will be doing.

Watching TV – I can see where studies show too much TV is bad, but I doubt a 4 hour show will cause harm.

Eating – Surely too many potato chips cant bet good for your spare tire, but I think Pringles are brain food*.

Hanging out with friends- The occasional high-five may cause a sore hand, but no brain damage here.

Drinking- DING DING DING, we have a winner.   Beer sales exceeding the GDP of some small countries* is sure to alter your brain more than putting $5 on a square.

Tech Toilet regulars (ie, me) will notice the new look of Tech Toilet. That’s because google decided to change drop FTP/SFTP connections. The means if you want to use blogger, you have to let google host it. You can keep your domain name, but loose the server mgmt. I pay good money to host my sites, and decided to drop blogger. So long, wordpress looks better anyway.
